Description

Organization Mission

Recidiviz's mission is to reduce incarceration safely, equitably and at-scale. We are a team of technologists working side by side with justice-impacted communities, practitioners, and ecosystem partners to build a better path forward. We partner with corrections agencies to shrink the system and reduce disparities by modernizing their use of data.

Organization History

  • Recidiviz was an all-volunteer effort until early 2019, when Clementine, Andrew, and Josh officially founded the organization. Since 2019, Recidiviz has built an A-team of software engineers, designers, product managers and domain experts, from companies like Google, Apple, and Dropbox.
  • Recidiviz was part of Y-Combinator's 2019 class and has received support from respected philanthropists and foundations, including Arnold Ventures, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Schmidt Futures, Ford Foundation, and the Mozilla Foundation.
  • Four years in, Recidiviz is working in 11 states – big and small, red and blue. These states are responsible for 1 in 4 people in prison in the US.
  • To-date, Recidiviz has helped remove 70,000 people from the criminal justice system (saving states nearly $1 billion along the way).
  • Over the next five years, Recidiviz is bringing its platform to national scale and aims to safely shrink the criminal justice system by 300,000 people.
  • In addition to partnering with state Departments of Corrections, Recidiviz collaborates with partners—from the Correctional Leaders Association to community-based organizations, to people directly impacted by the system—who guide our work and our strategy.

The Role

Recidiviz is a fast moving team focused on arming corrections agencies with the data that they need to quickly reduce incarceration in the US criminal justice system. When we find a solution that works, we scale it–quickly. We are now reaching 1 in 4 people in prison in the US. In 2023, we're focused on deepening our impact in each of our 11 partner states, expanding to new states, and growing the team. That's where you come in.

In this role, you'll work closely with the CEO and Chief of Staff to bring in the revenue required to do the work. You'll run the development (fundraising) pipeline soup-to-nuts. You will be responsible for building and executing a diversified, stable, and ambitious revenue strategy.

What does wild success look like? A year from now, you will:

  • Own the funder pipeline: You will track the relationship of all Recidiviz supporters such that they receive tailored, timely updates and communications. You'll have seamlessly tracked pledges and gifts, collaborating with finance along the way. You'll have a deep understanding of what each funder cares about.
  • Strengthen the pipeline: You will have created and executed next steps for each of Recidiviz's supporters. You'll have identified gaps throughout the pipeline that lead to increased engagement and new prospects. You'll have converted skeptics into evangelists through tailored communications.

Core Responsibilities

This role has two major components: operations and strategy. This role is entrepreneurial and fundraising experience is not required. Proactivity, detail-orientation, and collaboration are crucial.

Operations

  • Manage the donor database, including researching prospective donors, setting goals, logging relationships, and determining actions to ensure current and prospective donors receive first-class service
  • Manage the donation process, including tracking pledges, acknowledgements, recognition, and receipts / letters of appreciation
  • Support continued giving through compliance with grant requirements

Strategy

  • Identify gaps in the development pipeline and recommend specific actions to address those gaps
  • Provide relevant data and analysis to support the revenue strategy, shared with leadership team and board
  • Set and track towards quarterly revenue goals
  • Collaborate closely with operations on financial forecasts
  • Prepare materials for conferences and events with prospective donors

Qualifications

  • You have 3-5 years of work experience and are excited to apply your skills on a fast-paced and scrappy team.
  • You're passionate about our mission to dramatically reduce incarceration in ways that are safe and equitable, and you're excited to work in a startup environment where you'll have a lot of ownership in making that mission a reality.
  • You live and breathe organization. You bring order to chaos by being thorough and systematic. You get energized by creating and maintaining systems.
  • You always dot your i's and cross your t's. You thrive in the details. In your work, you leave no stone unturned. You maintain a high bar of polish for the work that crosses your desk.
  • You can run with ambiguity. You can take a debrief from a funder meeting, figure out what "wild success" looks like, deep-dive into the details, become an expert, and deliver a result that you feel proud of. You are a resourceful and independent problem solver.
  • You're a great teammate. You pick up balls that are dropping, you roll up your sleeves to do what it takes to move the mission forward, you identify gaps and fill them temporarily, while designing and advocating for the right long-term solution.
